Being clear about what your intention is when you are communicating with others is powerful. The intention of your communication has great influence on the outcome of what you want to convey to your colleagues, manager or perhaps your clients about your views, your vision or maybe even your worries. You can learn how to integrate your intentions into your communication during your everyday work activities and other interactions, instead of just replying to what is being said by someone else.
"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction" (Newton's 3rd Law of Motion). This principle can also be applied to your communication, as everything you say or everything you do, will have a consequence, or a reaction. However, when communicating and interacting with others, their reactions can be rather unpredictable. When you clearly understand what your intention is when communicating, you will gain more insight into the effective, but also into the less effective effects of your own communication style. It will help you approach unpredictable reactions with a more diplomatic and problemsolving approach.
Being aware of this principle each time you interact with others, will naturally help you to further develop your Organisational Sensitivity. This means that you will be able to understand others better, to create understanding for yourself and to develop leadership skills. Effective and good leadership, at any level within an organization, requires clarity (knowing your intention), empathy, as well as the ability to listen.
Having insight into yourself and others requires a certain level of 'maturity' and genuine interest in the other person you are communicating with. Understanding your own communication style and how you interact with others, can be of crucial importance to your personal development and consequently to the speed and profoundness of your career development.
The good news is that big enhancements can be made in a short time, simply by implementing relatively small adjustments in your communication. Only effective and genuine communication can lead to 'engagement' and connection with others. Through connecting and engaging with others, understanding amongst teams in any level of the organisation will increase naturally. Mutual understanding provides a solid foundation for lasting work (and also personal) relationships – understanding each other will also stimulate creativity and innovation within teams. Especially in times of turmoil and high work pressure, mutual understanding can provide a solid foundation.
Another positive side-effect that comes with being more aware of the effect of your communication is the 'likeability or reciprocity factor' which is automatically increased. Only through sincere and open communication, trust and loyalty can grow continuously.
After having worked in the area of internal and external communications and marketing for over 15 years, Kathrin Blaha started ‘ComFusion’.
ComFusion originates from Kathrin's passion and belief that by gaining insight into your own communication style, as well as that of a colleague, manager or customer, misunderstandings with costly financial, and perhaps emotional, consequences can be reversed or even prevented.
ComFusion can help you with developing your organisational sensitivity and to become more aware of ineffective communication patterns in your, or your team's, communication style. By becoming more aware of these patterns and making relatively small adjustments, major differences in interacting with others, or with each other as a team, can be noticed immediately.
In relation to increasing your company’s Safety Culture and incident prevention efforts, ComFusion can help your team to increase clarity in their communication and interactions during operational activities.
We intentionally do not work with one single methodology or one particular model only - each situation is unique, and deserves its own tailor made solution.
